Reflection of 2022

Hola Bloggers!

This has been an exciting year. I’ve learnt heaps of things, including; how to make SUSHI (yum!) and hundreds of words in spanish (my new hobby). My best friend’s little brother says that another of my skills is being funny and weird. That made me laugh. Next year I hope to learn more recipes because I love cooking. Mum’s cooking is teriffic and I want to make food just like her’s.

I’m really proud of my learning in spanish. I use Duolingo and I walk to lessons. I’m also proud of how far I’ve come in scouts. It’s been THREE YEARS. Thanks to my dad who has been learning spanish too, and helping at the scout den. my dislikes about 2022 were pretty simple.                                                                                                                                           1) Whenever my parents would make me eat a mushroom, the texture is just horrible!                                                             2) Waking up, easy to understand, no need to explain.                                                                                                                      3) The drive back from camp, I felt sick, I had to get up and go to the front of the bus. At least the view was good!

There are so many highlights I could list for this year. But of course, there is no time. Here’s a few; I loved snorkelling at camp. There were so many things to see underwater! Camp in general was awesome too, I was in a cabin with my besties, there was great food and thrilling experiences. Waifest, this is a festival that Waikowhai Intermediate School – hence the name ‘Waifest’ – puts on . There are dances and heaps of FOOD!

I’m really going to miss this school, being my first one EVER. But there are some key points that are REALLY important to me; the teachers, especially the ones that taught me, the library, I’ve spent SO MUCH time there. Other, younger kids, and the new improvements going on. Plus (of course) the school itself! I know my way around like I know numbers up to ten, my new school is going to take some getting used to.

My favourite subject this year was reading because of the compelling creates we got to do. There were chances to make collages, paintings, dioramas, experiments, newspapers, models and so much more. We get given novels each week to read at home. I love reading the books that Mrs Jones suggests for us. I liked ‘ The January Stars’ by Kate Constable the best.

My biggest improvement was trying new things. There were so many opportunities at camp, zones we could try out for, and jobs we could do at school. I will never forget 2022 because of all things I’ve done, new friendships I’ve made and trips I’ve been on. It’s been an amazing last year of primary school.

Let me know in the comments what your year was like. Did you enjoy it? Have a look at some pictures of me this year.

That’s me with my hair going all over the place and my friend Lily pushing me.

Celebrating the injustice of Parihaka

Hola bloggers!

Today is Parihaka Remembrance Day and everyone in the school was asked to wear white. Land was taken in the 1860’s from many Maori tribes. The leaders were not keen on fighting with weapons. Everyone in Parihaka wore a plume of white feathers on their head to show peace. They protested by taking out survey pegs and hugging trees that would have been cut down.

Over the past three days we’ve been making headband with black and white Taniko patterns drawn on them. We started by tracing paterns with pencil of a piece of shiny paper.  When we were finished and the teachers had checked it, we could go over it with vivid. We could then get some double sided tape, measure the circumference of our head, and stick both ends together. We went to Ms Sands to tape our feathers on. I chose to do three. Here’s the finished product! I hate pictures, so don’t blame me.

I hope you enjoyed reading this blog post. Do you celebrate Parihaka?

Bye!

Go Black Ferns!

Hola Bloggers!

Who are the Black Ferns, you ask. Well, if you live in New Zealand like me, you will know that the Black Ferns are the Woman’s rugby team. At the moment, they are getting ready for the Quarter Finals of the Rugby World Cup 2022. They will be playing tomorrow, Saturday the 29th of October, at the Northland Events Centre.

The Black Ferns Franchise sent us some awesome gifts; rugby balls, posters, letters, and much, much more! We wrote letters to thank them for their love and to pump them up before their next big game. They have been sent off along with a video of us cheering and rooting for them to win. You can watch it here…

To fill out the match schedule below, we used this website to find out the scores. Explore the website and answer these questions in the comments if you have time. (Find them at the bottom of this blog post.) And about that letter we wrote, here’s mine!

Questions!

What day did the World Cup start?

What day is the final? And at what time?

I will check the comments to see if you reply. I hope you enjoyed reading about the Black Ferns. Have you ever been to a rugby game? If not, you should!

Hola bloggers!

On Tuesday the 18th of October, TWA hopped on a bus to the Auckland Musuem on Pukekawa Maunga because last term we had a focus on disasters and now we are going to be looking at migration. We were in groups of four and we wandered around the museum doing activities. Here’s a quick rundown of what went on.

Group three was a cluster of six mini-groups led by parents. First up, we walked all the way to the other side of the museum to the volcano room, where group three squashed into a room and experienced an “EXPLOSION”!

Check out the slideshow below to see my favourite parts of the museum;

Have you ever been to a museum? What did you find out? Please tell me in the comments.

Year 6 camp

Hola bloggers!

Monday 9th of May we left Auckland for camp. All the kids were waving out the windows of the bus to their parents. The trip took about and hour and a half to get to Goat Island. It was going to be the best week ever!

Tuesday 10th of May. Things were already going downwards. Everyone in my cabin had a horrible sleep and were a bit grouchy in the morning. We had breakfast and set of in the bus to Mangawhai surf club. They showed us the equipment they used for resues, and the cool buggies they use to travel over the beach. After that they talked about rips and how to look for them. To find out where there are rips, you need to look for partings in waves and/or criss crossing waves. then we got to play in the waves, which was really fun!

When we arrived back at camp, the teachers set up the long, stretching waterslide. I took heaps of photos because I had decided not to go on and had nothing else to do. After dinner we went out to the tall, dark forest. The wind whistled past my ears. The moon was so bright! We were going to do a burma trail in the bush. The manager of the camp had set up a long piece of rope wrapping around the trees. It was dark, and scary. The first time we did it we went with our cabin groups. When we came out, I was totally fine! It wasn’t scary at all. So I decide to go again, alone. The adults wanted to scare us and make the silent night loud with screams. They jumped out at us, put speakers amongst the ferns to make it sound like there was a waterfall, or croaking frogs.

I learned that trying something new could spark a new hobby or liking. You will never know if you like it or not until you try. I thought I was not going to like doing the burma trail. But I tried anyway.

I hope you like reading this post. I had a great time at camp.

Writing lessons with Miss McGrath!

Hola Bloggers!

This week we have been learning about reported speech. Reported speech is where the writer is saying what another person has already said. For example, “I love eating chocolate!” exclaimed Lily. So to make it into reported speech you say: Lily exclaimed that she loved eating choolate.

We got given pictures to write reported speech about. If you finished early, you could add more pictures with more reported speech. (You will see what I mean when you click on the picture below.)

Hope you enjoyed reading my post. Any feedback? Feel free to add a comment!

Volleyball at school

Hola bloggers!

This term for P.E. we are learning volleyball. Every Wednesday, a man called Tausisi comes in and teaches us.

The volleyball cycle is serve, recieve, set, spike. I didn’t know any of this yet because I had to isolate during the first lesson. To do a serve, you have to hold the ball, with a strait arm, in front of your hitting arm. Your hitting arm should be in a fist. Then, with your hitting arm back behind you, swing your arm and hit the ball.

To receive, you put your fingers over the others, cup your hands, and put your thumbs over the top. The ball must bounce on your forearm, not your elbows or hands. If you are practising, bounce the ball on your forearms twice, then hit the ball towards your partner. If you don’t have someone to practise with, use a wall or a door to bounce off.

When you are setting, make your index fingers and thumbs into a sort of diamond shape. Toss the ball above your head, and capture it over your head as well. Catching the ball below your head is illegal in volleyball. Setting is my favourite because I am really good at it!

Growth Mindset with Lego!

Kia Ora bloggers,

We have been looking at growth mindsets in maths. This class dojo video is about making mistakes and learning from them. By pressing the ‘X’ in the top corner you can get to more videos and an activity.

https://ideas.classdojo.com/f/growth-mindset-2/0

The work I struggled with was something that actually seemed easy. It was a LEGO slideshow, where we had to make things out of lego. I struggled a lot because we were only allowed the exact number of studs it said. For example, if there had to be 20 studs seen from a birds eye view, we were allowed no more, no less. Here is the slideshow.

I had a lot of fun even if there were a lot of struggles. What do you think? Any feedback?
